Social benefits and aid from the Municipality of Linares: how to apply
Many families in Linares are entitled to social benefits and aid they never claim, simply because they don't know they exist or think the paperwork is too complicated. The Municipality of Linares, through its Community Development Department (DIDECO) and other offices, runs subsidies, employment programmes and support for women, older people and families with children. In this guide we explain, using the information published by the Municipality itself, the main benefits, their requirements, the documents you need to bring and where to apply. Amounts and deadlines can change every year, so call to confirm before you go.
Step one: the Social Household Registry
Almost every social benefit in Chile, including those offered by the Municipality of Linares, requires you to be on the Social Household Registry (Registro Social de Hogares, RSH). It is a government database that places each household in a socio-economic bracket, from 40% to 100%, based on income and other data. That bracket determines which benefits you can apply for: for example, the family subsidy is for the most vulnerable 60%, and the discount on waste collection fees is for households up to 70%.
You can register or update your Social Household Registry online at registrosocial.gob.cl with your ClaveÚnica, or in person at the Registry office of DIDECO Linares, Freire 452, open Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 12:30. The public service phone is (73) 256 4683. Also check that the address on your statement is in the commune of Linares and that everyone who lives with you is correctly registered: many applications are rejected because of outdated details.

Family subsidy (SUF): requirements and documents
The Subsidio Único Familiar (SUF) is a monthly cash payment for mothers, fathers or guardians who care for children and do not receive the family allowance, usually because they don't have a formal employment contract. According to the Municipality of Linares, it is aimed at the most vulnerable 60% of the Social Household Registry, it is paid for each dependant, and the amount is doubled when the dependant has a disability. The benefit lasts three years and can be renewed until the child turns 18. The amount is adjusted every year: check it at ChileAtiende or at DIDECO.
To apply in Linares you need the signed application form, each child's birth certificate, the applicant's ID card and, where applicable, the court order granting custody. For children under 6 you need the latest healthy-child check-up (no more than 3 months old) or a certificate from the health centre, and for children over 6, a school enrolment certificate for the current year. You can apply online on the Municipality's subsidies page, corporacionlinares.cl/subsidios, or in person at DIDECO, ground floor of Freire 452, Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 11:00. Questions about applications are answered on +56 9 8774 9705, from 08:30 to 12:00.
Drinking-water subsidy (SAP) in Linares
The urban drinking-water subsidy is funded by the State and managed by the Municipality: it pays a percentage of the water bill for the first 15 cubic metres each month. The percentage depends on local water rates and the household's socio-economic situation, and families in the Seguridades y Oportunidades (Security and Opportunities) subsystem can receive 100% for those first 15 cubic metres. It is a discount you notice every month, especially in large households.
You can apply if you have a valid Social Household Registry entry in Linares, live at the address shown on the water bill and are up to date with your payments. You must bring a photocopy of the head of household's ID card, the original bill for the month and proof that the bill has been paid. The subsidy lasts three years and is lost if you stop paying the bill, move house or your financial situation changes, so it's best not to fall behind on your water bill. You apply in the same place as for the SUF: online or at DIDECO.
Gas discount from the Municipality of Linares
The Municipality of Linares has an online form to sign up for its gas discount benefit at corporacionlinares.cl/gas-linares. You sign up with just your RUT (national ID number) by accepting the benefit's terms and conditions, which are published on the same page. Before signing up, read those terms to find out who is eligible, how the discount is given and which distributors accept it, and if you have questions call DIDECO.
Women Heads of Household programme
The Mujeres Jefas de Hogar (Women Heads of Household) programme helps women who are the main breadwinners in their families to find work, raise their income or grow their own business. In Linares it offers trade training courses, digital literacy, dental care, primary and secondary education for adults and guidance on entering higher education, access to childcare, help applying for grant funding, a women's entrepreneurship school and job-readiness workshops.
To take part you must head your household or family unit, be between 18 and 65, be working or looking for work, live or work in the commune of Linares and not have taken part in the programme in the last three years. Bring a photocopy of your ID card, your Social Household Registry statement and proof of address, such as a certificate from your neighbourhood association or a utility bill in your name. You can sign up in person at Freire 452, third floor, from 08:30 to 14:00, or online on the programme's page. Phone: (73) 256 4696; email: jefasdehogar@corporacionlinares.cl. DIDECO also runs housing programmes, Chile Crece Contigo for early childhood, Prodesal for small farmers, business development for entrepreneurs and a migrant affairs office. And don't forget two municipal services that help your budget: the Community Pharmacy, with lower-priced medicines, and the Municipal Veterinary Clinic, which treats dogs and cats belonging to local residents free of charge.

Tips so your application isn't rejected
Before you go to apply, check three things. First, that your Social Household Registry is up to date, with your address in Linares and the people who live with you. Second, that you bring all the original documents and photocopies: an incomplete application is often left pending or rejected. Third, that you stick to the opening hours: DIDECO opens in the morning and some in-person applications are only accepted until 11:00.
Always ask whether the process can be done online, because several benefits, such as the SUF, the drinking-water subsidy, the gas discount and the Women Heads of Household programme, have a form on the Municipality's website. Keep proof of your application and write down the date and the name of the person who helped you. And if you don't know which benefit to apply for, ask for an interview with a DIDECO social worker: their job is precisely to advise you according to your situation. All the phone numbers and addresses are on our offices and services in Linares page.
