Cinema in Linares: where to watch movies in 2026

By Francisco Javier MoralesOctober 11, 2026Today7 min read

It's one of the questions locals and visitors ask most often: is there a cinema in Linares? The short answer is that Linares doesn't currently have a commercial multiplex with a daily program of new releases, like the ones found in shopping malls in bigger cities. But that doesn't mean you can't watch films in Linares. The city has screenings at the Municipal Theater, free film series at the Museum of Art and Crafts, an active film club, festivals that stop in the area and, less than an hour away, the commercial cinema in Talca. This guide covers every option for watching movies in Linares and how to find out what's coming up.

Is there a commercial cinema in Linares?

Today there is no commercial cinema in Linares with screenings every day. For decades the city had its own downtown and neighborhood movie theaters, which are part of many local families' memories, but as happened in so many mid-sized Chilean cities, those theaters closed with the arrival of home video, cable and later streaming. Today, when someone searches for "cinema in Linares" on Google, results often show Linares in Spain or Linares in Mexico, which do have multiplexes: don't be confused, those listings aren't for our city.

Still, the lack of a multiplex doesn't mean there's no cinema in Linares. The local offer is different: fewer Hollywood releases and more free screenings, themed series, Latin American cinema, family films during school holidays and independent film festivals. If you know where to look, you can watch good films in Linares without leaving town and often without paying for a ticket.

Cinema in Linares: screenings and film series

Linares Municipal Theater: free film screenings

The main venue for watching films in Linares is the Linares Municipal Theater, at Independencia 520, right downtown. Besides plays and concerts, the theater schedules film screenings at different times of the year. The best-known example is the Winter Film Series organized by the Municipality of Linares during the winter school holidays: in 2026 it ran from Monday, June 22 to Sunday, July 5, with daily screenings at 3:00 p.m., free admission and films aimed at children and families.

Since the theater's program changes with the season, it's best to follow the social media of the Municipality and Linares Cultura, or call the Municipality at +56 73 256 4600 to ask about upcoming screenings. Free screenings tend to fill up quickly, especially during the holidays, so arrive early. Our guide to theater and cultural life in Linares has more details about the theater and other cultural venues in the city.

Film series at the Linares Museum of Art and Crafts

Another key place to watch films in Linares is the Linares Museum of Art and Crafts, at Av. Valentín Letelier 572. The museum, run by the National Cultural Heritage Service, has the Paz Olea Carrillo Auditorium, which hosts film series and other activities open to the community.

It's home to the Manuel Astica Fuentes Film Club, which in July 2026 presented "Abrigos de Invierno" (Winter Coats), a Latin American film series with screenings at 3:00 p.m. and free admission. Each screening included an introduction to the film and a discussion afterwards, something a multiplex doesn't offer and that turns a trip to the movies into a more personal experience. If you enjoy arthouse cinema or like talking about what you've seen, this club is a great way into the cultural life of Linares.

The museum publishes its program at museodelinares.gob.cl. Keep in mind it was closed for works in August and September 2026 and reopened on Tuesday, October 6, so check its website before you go.

Film festivals that come to Linares

Linares also hosts traveling festivals that bring cinema to different towns in the region. One of them is the Felina Film Festival, which tours the Maule Region with a free program: in 2025 it held screenings in the auditorium of the University of Talca's Linares Campus, and for 2026 it announced screenings in ten Maule towns during October. Each year's dates and venues are posted on the festival's official social media, so it's worth following if you want to see Chilean and independent films in Linares.

Schools, neighborhood associations, the technical college and the university also organize outdoor screenings or shows in their auditoriums, especially in summer and on special dates such as the Linares anniversary. Many of these activities are announced at short notice on social media and in local news outlets, so keep an eye on the city's cultural calendar.

The nearest commercial cinema to Linares: Talca

If you're looking for a new release on a big screen with surround sound and popcorn, the nearest commercial cinema to Linares is in Talca, about 50 kilometers away on Route 5 South. Mall Plaza Maule (Av. Circunvalación 30 Oriente 1055) has a Cinépolis complex on level 1 with new releases every day. Showtimes and tickets are on Cinépolis Chile's official website, under Sur de Chile, Plaza Maule Talca.

To get there from Linares you have two options: by car, the trip along Route 5 takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic; by bus, there are frequent departures from the Linares terminals to Talca throughout the day. Our Linares transport page lists the terminals, bus companies and reference timetables. If you're going to an evening show, check when the last bus back to Linares leaves before buying your ticket.

Tips for watching films in Linares without missing out

The film offer in Linares is less regular than in a big city, so the key is to stay informed. These tips will help you avoid missing any screening:

Follow the social media of the Municipality of Linares, Linares Cultura, the Municipal Theater and the Museum of Art and Crafts: that's where film series are announced, almost always with free admission. Also check local news outlets, which publish the week's cultural calendar.

The winter and summer holidays are when Linares has the most free cinema, with family and children's films. If you have kids, plan ahead, because the venues fill up.

For new releases, buy your Talca tickets online and plan your trip back by bus or car. Many families make a day of it, shopping or eating in Talca and returning to Linares in the evening.

And if you like films you can talk about, join the Manuel Astica Fuentes Film Club or the activities at the Linares Cultural Center. Watching a film followed by a good conversation is one of the best ways to meet people with similar interests in the city.
