How to register at a CESFAM in Linares: Fonasa, GES and primary care
If you have moved house, just arrived in the city or never registered, this guide is for you. Registering at a CESFAM in Linares is the first step to using public healthcare: without registration you can't book an appointment with your family doctor, collect your regular medication or join the health programmes. Here we explain, step by step, what a CESFAM is, which one is yours in Linares, which documents you need, how to book appointments and what benefits you have as a Fonasa member. The information is general: opening hours and some requirements may change, so always check with your health centre.
What is a CESFAM and what is it for in Linares?
A CESFAM (Centro de Salud Familiar, or family health centre) is the entry point to the public healthcare network. In Linares, the CESFAMs are run by the Municipal Health Department and are part of primary care. They provide check-ups for children, adults and older people, general practice consultations, pregnancy check-ups, dental care, vaccines, basic tests, medicines and programmes for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
The CESFAM is also where you are referred to a specialist or to the hospital when you need it. That is why being registered matters so much: the health team for your sector knows your history and follows you over time. Each CESFAM works with sectors, identified by colours, and every family is assigned a care team.

The CESFAMs in Linares and which one is yours
The municipality of Linares has several primary care centres. The main ones are CESFAM San Juan de Dios on Colo Colo Street, CESFAM Valentín Letelier on Rengo Street, CESFAM Luis Navarrete Carvacho on Av. Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, and CESFAM Óscar Bonilla, opened in 2026 in the José María Bari neighbourhood. There is also the CECOSF Yerbas Buenas and the rural health posts that serve the countryside.
You can't simply choose any CESFAM: you belong to the one that serves the sector where you live. If you don't know which is yours, the easiest thing is to call or visit the CESFAM closest to your home with your exact address, and they will tell you whether it is yours or where you should go. In the Health category in Linares you'll find all the CESFAMs, rural posts, emergency services and medical centres in the municipality with their addresses.
Requirements to register at a CESFAM in Linares
To register at a CESFAM in Linares you must be a Fonasa beneficiary or have no health insurance. In general you'll be asked for a valid ID card and a document proving your address within the sector, such as an electricity or water bill in your name or a certificate of residence from your neighbourhood association. If you are registering your children, also bring each child's ID card or birth certificate.
Registration is done in person at the CESFAM's SOME desk (medical records and appointments office) and it is free. When you register you are assigned to a sector and a health team. If you move to another sector, you must register at the CESFAM for your new address; your previous registration is transferred automatically. Migrants can also register, even while their papers are being processed: ask at the SOME desk about the procedure.
Fonasa and primary care in Linares: what is covered
If you are in Fonasa, care at the CESFAMs costs you nothing. Since 2022 there has been zero co-payment in the public network for all Fonasa brackets (A, B, C and D), which means consultations, check-ups, tests and medicines provided by the CESFAM are free. To check your bracket or update your details you can go to the Fonasa branch in Linares at Lautaro 514-C, or to the Fonasa desk at ChileAtiende, Independencia 667.
In addition, the GES (or AUGE) system guarantees care for more than 80 health conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, several types of cancer and dental emergencies, with maximum waiting times and financial protection. Many of these conditions are diagnosed and monitored at the CESFAM itself. If you have questions about dental care, see our guide to dentists in Linares and dental care through Fonasa.

How to book an appointment at your CESFAM in Linares
Once registered, you can book appointments in several ways depending on the CESFAM: in person at the SOME desk, by phone or, at some centres, through digital channels and the telehealth service. General practice appointments are in high demand, so it's best to call early. For programme check-ups, such as those for chronic conditions or healthy-child visits, the team gives you your next appointment at the end of each visit.
If you take medication permanently, ask your CESFAM about repeat prescriptions, which let you collect your medicines every month without booking a new doctor's appointment. It's also a good idea to keep your phone number and address up to date at the SOME desk, so they can let you know about changes to appointments, vaccination campaigns or test results.
Health programmes you can use at your CESFAM in Linares
Being registered at a CESFAM in Linares gives you access to much more than a doctor's appointment. Children have healthy-child check-ups, with vaccines, growth and development assessments, and milk and food from the National Supplementary Food Programme. Pregnant women have check-ups with a midwife, ultrasounds, antenatal classes and dental care. Adults can have the Preventive Medical Examination, a free check-up that detects high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol early.
Older people have the functional assessment for older adults and supplementary food programmes, and people with chronic conditions receive regular check-ups and their medicines free of charge. CESFAMs also offer mental health care, with psychologists and social workers, as well as rehabilitation programmes. Ask at your CESFAM's SOME or OIRS (information and complaints) desk which programmes apply to you according to your age and situation: many people don't use them simply because they don't know they exist.
Emergencies in Linares: SAR, SAPU and the Hospital
The CESFAM is not the place for a serious emergency. If you have an urgent problem outside CESFAM hours, you can go to the primary care emergency services in Linares, such as the SAR San Juan de Dios or the municipality's SAPUs, which handle medium-complexity emergencies. For serious emergencies, such as an accident, chest pain or difficulty breathing, go straight to the emergency department of Linares Hospital at Av. Brasil 753, or call 131 for a SAMU ambulance.
Knowing where to go in each case helps you get seen faster and keeps the hospital emergency room from being overwhelmed with visits that could be handled at the CESFAM or the SAPU. Save your CESFAM's and SAMU's numbers in your phone, and see our useful information for Linares page with the municipality's emergency and key phone numbers.
