How to apply to a school in Linares: a complete guide for parents

By Francisco Javier MoralesSeptember 29, 20263 days ago9 min read

Applying to a school in Linares raises a lot of questions, especially the first time: Where do you apply? Do you have to go to the school or is everything done online? How much are the monthly fees? What happens if my child doesn't get into the school I want? This guide brings together, step by step, everything a parent needs to know to enroll their son or daughter in a school in the area, with the dates of the 2027 admission process and specific information about Linares schools.

Before we start, one fact that shapes everything else: in Linares, the vast majority of schools receive state funding. Of the 69 operating schools listed in our Education in Linares category, 36 are public, 32 are state-subsidized private schools and only one is a fee-paying private school. That means that, in almost every case, you don't apply at the school itself but through a single platform run by the Ministry of Education.

Where to apply to a school in Linares: the School Admission System (SAE)

To apply to a public or state-subsidized school in Linares, you use the School Admission System (SAE) at sistemadeadmisionescolar.cl. The process is 100% online and free: there are no lines at schools, you don't pay to apply, and no school can ask for interviews, entrance exams or documents such as report cards or personality reports to decide who gets in.

The SAE is used for entry from pre-K through the final year of high school. You need to apply if your child is entering the school system for the first time (for example, a child starting pre-K or kindergarten), wants to change schools, or is finishing the last grade their current school offers, such as a student completing eighth grade at a school without a high school. If your child is staying at the same school, you don't need to apply: their place is guaranteed.

Some schools are outside the SAE and you apply to them directly: fee-paying private schools (in Linares, Colegio Alborada), special-needs schools, adult education, and the JUNJI and Integra nurseries and preschools, which have their own enrollment process at each center or on their websites. If you're looking for one of these, it's a good idea to call or visit several months ahead.

How to apply to a school in Linares, step by step

Step 1, register as a parent: go to sistemadeadmisionescolar.cl and create your account with your RUN (Chilean ID number) or your ClaveÚnica. Then add each student you're applying for with their RUN. If your child is a foreign national and doesn't have a Chilean RUN yet, the Ministry issues a Provisional School Identifier (IPE) at Ayuda Mineduc offices so they can still apply.

Step 2, review and compare schools: the platform shows a map of every school in Linares with openings in the grade you're looking for, with its educational approach, school day, inclusion programs and whether it charges monthly fees. Use this stage to visit schools, talk to other parents and look at the PAES and SIMCE results for Linares schools, keeping in mind that a test score doesn't tell you everything about a school.

Step 3, rank your list in order of preference: the order is the most important part of the whole application. Put the school you want most in first place, even if you think it's hard to get into, because the system always tries to give you the highest option possible. The Ministry recommends applying to at least six schools, because applying to just one greatly increases the risk of not getting a place anywhere.

Step 4, submit the application and keep the receipt: you can change it as many times as you like while the period is open, and the last version you send is the one that counts. It isn't first come, first served, so applying on the first day gives you no advantage over applying on the last.

Dates for applying to schools in Linares: the 2027 admission calendar

The 2027 admission process, which sets places for the 2027 school year, has these key dates according to the Ministry of Education's calendar: the main application period ran from August 4 to 27, 2026; results are published between October 15 and 21, and during those same days parents must accept or reject the assigned school; waiting-list results come out on October 28 and 29; the supplementary application period runs from November 10 to 17, with results on December 1; and enrollment takes place directly at each school between December 9 and 22, 2026.

If you didn't manage to apply in August, you still have a chance: the supplementary period in November is open to those who didn't apply, those who rejected their result and those who didn't get any of their choices. At that stage only Linares schools that still have openings appear, so there are fewer options, but many families find a place then.

How places are assigned at Linares schools

When a school has more applicants than places, the SAE doesn't choose by grades or interviews: it ranks applicants according to priority criteria set by law and, within each group, at random. First priority goes to those who already have a brother or sister enrolled at the school; second, to priority students (from vulnerable households), up to 15% of the places in that grade; third, to the children of staff who work permanently at the school; and fourth, to former students who want to return, as long as they weren't expelled.

A practical tip: if you're applying for two or more siblings, the platform lets you indicate that you want them to stay together at the same school. It's a useful option for Linares families who don't want to split their children between different schools, with different schedules and parent meetings.

Monthly fees at Linares schools

This is one of the most frequently asked questions, and the answer reassures many families: the vast majority of schools in Linares are free. According to the Ministry of Education's official records that we use in our directory, 61 of the area's 69 schools don't charge monthly fees. That includes every public school, which since January 2026 have been run by the Los Álamos Local Public Education Service (SLEP), and most state-subsidized private schools.

Only a few subsidized schools in Linares still charge a monthly co-payment, which the Ministry publishes in brackets. For example, Colegio Amelia Troncoso and Escuela Lucila Godoy are in the CLP 25,001–50,000 bracket; Liceo Nuestra Señora del Rosario is between CLP 50,001 and 100,000; and Instituto Linares and Colegio Concepción Linares are in the over-CLP 100,000 bracket. The area's only fee-paying private school, Colegio Alborada, is also above CLP 100,000 a month. Since these amounts change every year, always confirm the exact figure directly with the school before applying.

There are two important things to know about co-payments. First, priority students don't pay the co-payment at subsidized schools, even if the school charges other families. Second, under the Inclusion Law, co-payments have been falling year after year and several Linares schools have already become completely free, so a school that charged a few years ago may not charge today.

Other costs when starting at a school in Linares

Besides monthly fees, it's worth keeping other expenses in mind. Contributions to the Parents' Association are always voluntary: no subsidized school can make enrollment conditional on paying them. Schools may have a uniform, but they can't require you to buy it from a specific store or brand, and at state-funded schools a student can't be kept out of class for not having it. School supply lists can't require specific brands either.

Where you do need to budget is at fee-paying private schools, which aren't part of the SAE: they usually charge an annual enrollment fee on top of monthly fees, and they commonly have their own admission process with interviews or assessments. If you're considering that option, check the dates early, because many fill their places before the end of the year.

What to do with the result of your Linares school application

When the results come out, you'll have three options. You can accept the assigned school, which secures your place. You can accept it and also stay on the waiting list for the schools you ranked higher: if a place opens up at one of them, it's assigned to you automatically, and if not, you keep the school you accepted. Or you can reject the result, but be careful: if you reject it, you lose the place and have no school until you apply again in the supplementary period.

If you don't respond within the deadline, the system assumes you accepted the assigned school. And if your child didn't get any of their choices, the Ministry will suggest the nearest free school with openings to the address you registered, as well as the option of applying in the supplementary period.

The last step is enrollment: even if you have an assigned place, you must go to the school to enroll your child within the December dates. If you don't, the place may be given to another student. Bring your ID card and your child's, and ask at the same time about the supply list, the uniform and the first day of classes.

Where to get help applying to a school in Linares

If you don't have a computer or internet access, or the process is complicated for you, you can ask for help at Linares schools themselves during the application period, at Ayuda Mineduc offices, or by calling 600 600 2626. Many public schools also support families through the SLEP Los Álamos office at Freire 741, Linares.

Before deciding, we also recommend reading our guide on how to choose the best school in Linares, where we go over what to look for in the educational approach, the school day and extracurricular activities. And in our directory of schools, high schools and preschools in Linares you'll find each school's listing with its address, phone, grades offered, inclusion program (PIE) and monthly fee, so you can build your list of preferences with all the information at hand.

In short: applying to a school in Linares is simpler than it seems if you do it in good time. Look at several options, rank them by what you really prefer, apply to at least six, note the results and enrollment dates, and don't forget to respond on time. That way, your son or daughter will have their place secured for the next school year.
